Google Updates PageRank For the First Time in 6 Months

I was just reading on SEO Roundtable that for the first time in 6 months Google updated their page rank numbers. Google says they have been phasing out how much they use pagerank in their algorithm, but I think that the system still is very valuable. If you name has any page rank that Google's way of doing something right. And if you PR goes up it means you are really doing something right.

This site TeenDomainer just moved up from a PR 3 to PR 4. Many of my other sites that had no PR before now have PR 1 or 2 and some of my sites that were PR 1 moved up to PR 2. I do not have all of my results yet and am running my names through a bulk PR checker as I wrote this. I just saw a parked name that move up to PR 1... Thanks Google!

Like I said before PR does not change your ranking as much as it once did, but it does change what others think of your site and how much you can charge for advertising and links. It also changes how much you can sell a site for.

I tried a few weeks ago to buy some expired domain name with PR and this update looks like it hurt most of the sites PR which is not surprising. A few of the sites that I quickly built out held their PR or only lost 1 rank, but I do not think I will be buying to many more domain just based on their PR.

PR is not something that is impossible to get. Many of my minisites received their first pagerank this update some with as little as 4 pages. All you need is quality content and links back to your site. The sites of mine that gained PR are the ones where I went out and added a few links to them. Even a few (like 2 or 3) low PR links to a minisite seem to be enough to get the site PR.

So who know's when the next PR update will be, so start adding content and building links in time for the next one!

Google Updates Algorithm for Traffic Estimates, CPC and More

Google announced a week ago that it was updating its algorithm which runs the Google Adwords Keyword tool and also the Traffic estimator. Personally I use the keyword tool many times throughout the day to check on domain name search numbers, picking titles for websites and when writing articles. I also know that I am not the only domainer that enjoys using the tool.

Google says the tool will affect us in these ways

As a result of our updates, we hope to provide you with better statistics for estimated clicks, cost, and ad position. This change is effective now and affects all AdWords accounts globally.

It is not a huge deal like the "Panda" updated that literally killed a few sites, but it did shift CPC and other metrics up and down which some domainers use to valuate domains. It is meant to help people using adwords get a better idea of what they will be paying so they can determine their budget but it also changes the way people value their domain names because some people like names with high cpc.

For example I had a name that went from $5 cpc and I just looked and it moved to $13 cpc, and another name went from $4 to over $9. That examples aside I do not think that every domain's cpc went up. I could not remember many of my other names previous cpc's but if you have a few names take a look and see if anything has changed.

The big question is will these change ppc payouts with adsense?

While I have no exact answer I would say no. This change was just in the stats and does not really have anything to do with real ppc payouts. It will change how some people look at their domain names value and gives a better estimate of what companies are willing to pay for traffic in that market area.

Weekend Updates: Free Lockpicks, Prom, Adsense, and More

Its was a busy week for me with high school ending, I took my last AP exam on Thursday and then had prom Friday night. So now it is officially summer and I can spend a bit more time on domains and development that I could during the school year with nightly homework. Here are a few things that I have seen lately and also some updates on my sites.

- Adsense minisites are not dead. I have a few sites running only adsense and their earnings just keep getting better. It takes the right type of name for them to work on, they visitors must be looking exactly for what the ad is on. And with clicks from $1 to $2 a few clicks a day on a site are very nice. So do not count them out yet.

- I really like the news that godaddy is going to include auctions in the domain registration path. I think that is bigger news than many people realize since godaddy controls so much of the new registration market. I will be adding some names there soon and will let you know if any sales happen.

- When you apply for an affiliate program and do not get in (like I recently did) make sure you send an email to the affilate manager and ask for your application to be re reviewed, include details about your site and how you could help their company. Going out of your way to contact them will help your chances out about getting in the program.

- Two days ago I went through a list of all of my domains and realized I have a bunch of names I would like to do something on so lets see if I have time this summer. I also have an idea for a wordpress plugin and a bunch of other things. I also plan on having a going away to college sale so I have some cash before school starts so look for that soon.

- I want to try to develop a site that sells an e product like an ebook or video or audio course . I have some names that would work but the problem is that I know very little about their subject so I do not feel comfortable creating something about it. I could hire an expert but I will keep looking for the right name.

- Every day there are some nice names dropping that can be picked up and developed or resold for a nice profit. Also about auctions there was a name I wanted to buy yesterday but I forgot about the auction and spent the day at the beach and forgot to bid via my phone. So today to make sure I did not miss the auction I set an alarm and did not miss out, just an idea for the forgetful like me.

Domaining Helps Pay For College with $10,000 from Godaddy

I applied for the Godaddy Me Scholars program a few months ago and I found out a few days ago that I will be receiving $10,000 towards my college education at Emory University next year. The application was based on test scores, grade point average, and an essay. The essay was on how the internet and social media has had an impact on your life and growing up as a high schooler. I wrote about my experience in the domain industry and how I see domain names.

I was on godaddy one day buying a domain name when I saw the ad for the scholarship on the bottom of the page, and thought that it was a perfect scholarship for me. All of the hours I have spent learning about domaining have finally paid off in my parents eyes.

I also won a smaller scholarship for my domain business from the National Federation of Independent Business Young Entrepreneur Awards for $1,000.

So in total my college bill will be $11,000 less that it would have been without domaining. And that is not all that domaining has given me. Domaining has taught me so much more about business and sales.

I would like to use this post to thank everyone who has helped me along the way learn about domaining. People have been so nice and helpful to me and I hope that I can try and give a little information that I have learned with this blog. While today was my last day of high school an end of an important chapter in my life I am going to continue to invest in domain names in college and beyond.

Some Quality Domain Names Up For Sale on Flippa

While I was looking at some of the developed websites and domain names on Flippa I found a few nice auctions. Flippa has been reporting some really nice sales and seems to have the buyers on its site with money to spend. In the next week I might try and sell another one of my sites. There is a lot of 50 quality domain names for sale that caught my eye and the auction has no reserve, but is now up to $2,000 with over a day left.

There are some nice .com's but the real gems are the .net's and .org's of which I think many could be flipped. Flipping only 1 or 2 of them would pay for the whole lot of names. Estibot values all of the names at over $400,000

The auction claims the names get 20 to 25 thousand visits a month although some stats would be nice.

Pad.com Sells at Bido.com for $80,000

Yesterday the second auction auction for Pad.com sold for$ 80,000 on Bido. This from what I know is Bido's largest sale ever by almost 5 times. The reserve for the first auction was $90,000 which was not met with the bids only reaching $35,000. The name was then re auctioned with 38 bids and it reached the lower reserve this time.

I think that the name went for a good price. I think that the buyer got a nie price for the domain name and can sell it for more to other investors and for much more to an end user. On the other side I think that the seller got a fair price for his domain but there could have been a bit more press about the sale to let everyone know it was going on.
Pad can stand for many things. Including the many new pad electronics hitting the market now. A company calling their product pad would be very smart to own the name as would any company who sells a pad device. It can also stand for Peripheral arterial disease. There are also heath and other products that use the term pad.

After bido was relaunched there have not been huge sales or much major news. Like before the close, I have seen some decent names and sales from bido at low prices under $100. I like their system and concept but they just need more quality names. The unique click to vote system with profit sharing is great and with this sale the user who placed the first 3 votes made $616 dollars just from voting and even the 10th vote made $104 according to a thread on namepros. All they had to do was click and vote to send the domain name to auction and they were ale to do very well for 3 seconds of "work."

Namecake is selling some high quality names in a few days which should also bring some high quality bidders to the site and benifit all of the auctions and sellers on the site. The fees are not bad and it might be a nice time to clear some names in the $100 to $500 area with the other high quality auction going on.

Turns Out I Am Not A Teen Domainer

I don't really know how to put this but I am 48 years old. Hardly a teen domain but it just seemed so much easier to pose as a teendomainer.

I figured if I was a normal old male domainer with a blog no one would ever read what I have to say, so I claimed to be a teen. This way no one laughs about the couple bucks I make a month because for a teen its quite good money, but if you all knew I was a real adult you would not be as forgiving and kind to me.

Some people might say well we have seen you at those south Florida domaining events. Actually you have seen someone who is related to me. Thats my son who knows a little about domains and I give him some extra allowence to pretend to be me and talk with other domainers. My son loves doing it and its worked really well he says you guys are so much fun! He even really enjoyed last night and wants to thank John and the South Florida Domainers for a killer meetup party last night!

Posing as a teen also has other advantages. Many of the older guys are willing to share some secrets with a teen because they know what it is like to be young and remember what it was like when they started out. So I have learned so much from all of your secrets.

On to minisites, even though they do work quite well for me, I just don't think it is cool for an adult domainer to talk so much about minisites about camping and running. So when a teen domainer does it becomes alright and no one is like minisites are dead, well a few people still do.

And my drop lists, well if you have ever seen one of my lists you can tell I like product domains with some searches that can be picked up for not too much and developed. Its great to say I like the low cost names because of my low teenager budget! I still have to use my lunch money to buy domains.

Overall, its been fun pretending to be a teen domainer. It made me feel young again, I remember the days when the internet was invented and wish I would have jumped in the game earlier, but I did not and its much easier to say I was not born when the first .com rush happened than say I just did not thing .com would ever been worth anything.

South Florida Domainers Meetup Tonight 60+ Domainers

I am really excited about the event tonight at John Ferber's House that he has so nicely opened to 60 confirmed domainers and growing.

It starts at 7:00 and should be great time. Domain Holdings is sponsoring the event. The south Florida domaining group has really taken off and has grown to quite a few members. Major props to Mike, Stu, and Rick! They are the best.

The events are great places to talk with people face to face and share ideas. I always ask people what they have been up to since the last meeting and what has been working for them lately.

Just bouncing ideas and talking for a few hours can help out so much. Because one persons says something that makes someone else say another thing and then all of a sudden you get a great idea. I always come back from these meetings so excited I stay up super late working on the new ideas.

So what I am trying to say is if you in the area you should be there tonight. The guest list reads like an All Star team of domainers, its sure to be a fun event.

I will be sure to let you know how it goes with a nice wrap up and what I learned from the event.

Walgreen Buys Drugstore.com for $429 Million

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Walgreen is going to buy Drugstore.com Inc for $429 million. Of course this is sale of a whole business and not just a domain sale. Drugstore.com is an established online drugstore that had $456 million dollars in sales last year.

But I do not think that Walgreens would think about buying Cheapest-Drugs-Online.net for the same kind of price. The killer domain name helped Drugstore.com to become a leading online drugstore.

It is another example of huge companies buying smaller companies with killer domain names. (Amazon and diapers.com) It is obviously not just about the domain name, it is about the sites current revenue and customer basse.

Walgreens chief executive, Greg Wasson, said “Our acquisition of Drugstore.com today significantly accelerates our online strategy to leverage the best community store network in America by becoming the most convenient choice for health and daily living needs whether customers shop online or in our stores,”

Walgreens has been expanding online with an iPhone app, mobile web site and also a service that texts you when your perscription is ready.

It will be interesting to see is Walgreens does what amazon does and continues to let Diapers.com run no its own or will Walgreens take over the site or just forward it to its site.
