Some Short Sunday Statements

As another week ends and a new one begins I wanted to share a few random thoughts and things that went on this week.

On Thursaday I had dinner with the great guys at Bido Jarred and Sahar and the rest of the guys in blue. (The blue bido shirts) David Castello was also at dinner and we had a great time talking. I learned so much in just one night. I want to thank them again for sharing part of their vast knowledge with me.

While we are talking about Bido, I wanted to point out some larger sales they have been reporting. They are really moving the platform to the next level and with the new voting system everyone can make money. I will be talking more about this in another post but for now lets just say I really like the new system and changes at Bido!

Last night at 10:58 PM I sold another domain via Godaddy Premium Listings, if you follow me on twitter, this is my 4th name sold via Godaddy this year. A few days ago I just got my first check from Godaddy in the mail from the sale of the first name. I am really happy about this sales platform the only thing I don't like is the 30% commissions.

On a personal note I ran a half marathon two weeks ago in 1:21 which I was very happy with. All of the 60 mile weeks have paid off but now its back to track season. Last Friday at our meet I broke the 5 min mile which is always fun, now I am just trying to break 10 min in the 2 mile race.

Sell a Domain with a Website to Endusers and Get More Money

When selling a domain to an enduser if the domain is undeveloped or even parked, to the enduser it appears like you are just selling a domain.

If you have taken just a little bit of time and put up a quick minisite, wordpress blog, or even just a news aggregator the end user now is under the assumption that he is buying a website from you.

How will this enable you to sell your domain for more?

First there will be traffic and search engine rankings that increase the price of the domain

If you are earning any money at all the enduser is in a way buying a small part of your business from you and to many endusers this will justify a higher cost that they would have paid for a blank domain.

I am in talks about a domain name right now with a company about buying a domain and they do not call it a domain. They said "We would like to buy your website from you." The site is just a quick little minisite I put together, but it is going to make the sale larger that it would be if it was just for the domain. I might not even be in talks right now if I had not put up the minisite but that is another blog post.

.Mobi Will Not Make It Take a Look at My Generation

Every day I walk around school and everywhere I look I see that the .Mobi will not make it. My generation has been raised on the "smartphone." Be it an iphone, blackberry, windows mobile, or android cell phone they all run the full Internet. There is no need for videos.mobi when you can just go to videos.com on your phone. Once people grow up with a smartphone I do not think they will shift back.

None of my friends have ever heard of the .mobi. people know about m.twitter.com or m.google.com but not .Mobi. I personally see no point of the domain extension when you can just offer a mobile version of your site and have no need for the .mobi.

I do not own any .mobi names, nor do I plan on buying any anytime soon. I know this post my anger some, I am giving you my generations perspective, I think that is what is unique about my blog. I am not your normal domainer, I am still only 16 and can provide a different look at many things.

I have made post about my view's on LLLL.com's in the past I think their price has hit rock bottom and it might be the time to buy. I do not like the non preminum domains but they are short and the ones with acronyms will always have value.

Do You Own YourName.com? Why not?

Do you own yourname.com? Some people cringe at the extra registration fee every year, but not owning youname.com could end up costing you much more than the $10.00 a year.

Not only is yourname.com a great place to showcase a portfolio of your work and websites, it is unique to you. It is perfect to have a small personal blog with a about me page. This could be very important when you are looked at to be hired for a job. You could put a great resume on the site. It does not matter what profession you are in, you will always be identified by your name.

When people go to look at someone today they go to Google. They type in your name and click on the first result that comes up. You want the first result to be owned by you so that you can control what it says. No one wants the first result on Google when searching for their name to be about another person of the same name. It would be even worse if a complaint about the person came up first. This could end up costing you a job one day if it was bad enough.

You should register your name today because what if someone else is reading this with the same name as you and they register it? You do not want to have to buy your name from someone because it will end up being much more expensive.

In conclusion go to your favorite domain registrar and buy yourname.com and set it to auto renew. If you want put up a small site with an about yourself page and some links to your sites.

Why We Don’t Need More Extensions

In my opinion, as well as quite a few other domainers, it is a waste of money, and effort to allow large corporations to make their own domain name extensions.

I'm not going to try to explain how no one will remember .coke , or .ibm .
Personally, I think its fairly obvious how those would fail, for the most part.

I'm going to give you a down to earth example of how useless the new extensions would be to eveyone except icann.

A few days ago, myself and a couple of friends got together to build a fire, and hang out.
Around the fire, we were casually talking. My friends know that I work with domain names and websites, but for the most part, they don't understand how it all works. Most of the time, I don't bother trying to explain.

But somehow, we got on the topic of a website that uses ".info" for its domain name. None of them had even heard of ".info". I had to remind every single one of them of ".net" and ".org". One of them said they thought ".com" was the only "URL". They had forgotten the other 2 most popular extensions.

In my opinion, this shows 2 things:
1. How important it is to own the ".com" version of whatever domain name you are using. The 13-19 years olds are some of the most frequent web users, and you will loose tons of traffic to the ".com" if you don't have it.

2. "Vanity Extensions" (as I like to call them) have a very little chance at surviving. Even if you can remember ".coke", what will you type in to visit their home page? "home.coke" ? "site.coke"?

Don’t Miss A Sale!

I've been reading around the forums alot recently, and what I have noticed, is that many people are so scared of being scammed, they are passing up potentially huge sales.

Whenever someone makes a post on NamePros, for example, that says something along the lines of:
"Someone sent me an email, and asked me if my domain name was for sale", the thread gets about 5-6 posts that say its a scam. 99% of the time, this is without any knowledge about the email that was received. I'll admit, there are many times when scammers send out fake emails, to get you to fall for an appraisal scam, or to try to steal your domain name. You need to be aware of those scams, so that you don't fall victim to one of them. But at the same time, don't assume that every email you receive inquiring about a domain name is a scam. Be aware of what is going on, though. I would suggest keeping an eye on DomainNameScams. This blog is run by Reece Burg, and he writes posts that will keep you informed about the latest (you guessed it) domain name scams.

Here are the most important tips I can give you:

Never pay for an appraisal, especially if an end-user asks you to purchase one.
Always use a trusted escrow service. I suggest:
-Escrow.com
-EscrowDNS.com
-Moniker Escrow
-Sedo Escrow
When an end-user contacts you, don't be afraid to pick up the phone! It is much easier to sniff out a scam (and negotiate!) over the phone.

Little Known Typo Generator

For a while now, I've been using www.yvic.com. Just to add a touch of legitimacy to this review, the owner of this site did not request this post, nor have I ever even spoken to the owner

yvic.com is extremely convenient for me, because I can open it in a different tab, and let it work its magic. This tool does it all!
Heres what it does:

Generates about 85 different typo combinations.
Separates them in easy to read categories.
Checks for availability.
Uses ajax, so you can open it in a separate tab, and conduct your other business while it searches for available typos!

They have also recently redesigned the site. It used to be a hard to see, greenish color, but now it is a simple white with some blue & pink that is pleasing to the eyes. It is definitely an improvement.

Although this was a fairly short review, I think I made the point that www.yvic.com is a great site for anyone that is looking for typo's.
