A New Kind of Domain Name Dash-Coms

Warning: Illegal string offset 'keywords_time' in /home1/theman37/public_html/teendomainer.com/wp-content/plugins/internal_link_building.php_/internal_link_building.php on line 103

Everyone has been talking about all of the changes that are coming in the domain industry. I wanted to tell you about one I just heard about.

A new type of name has been released.  Brand new domain names called Dash-Coms  have been released (eg: “games-com” and “pc-net”) and the are free to register.

Some of the best names are being grabbed up like with any new domain extension. I spent a little time searching only to find that a lot of the best names have already been registered.  But, after the first searches, it wasn’t too difficult to find good ones still available.

Compared to Dotcoms, there are far more options available with DASH-COMs.  The options are limitless.  Now, you can start re-registering the “com” and “net” extensions all over again (for example:  “pear-com” or “orange-net”).  Most fun is that you can even create your own personalised tlds.  You can have domain names like “face-look”, “your-space” or “black-ops”.  Use any language, use any text.

DASH-COMs are available free at ISPs like http://dashworlds.com but what is the difference and how do you use them?  Well I needed to check it out.

Ok, once you’ve registered your domain(s), you get access to a control panel where there’s free forwarding available (URL, IP or DNS).  Just pick your configuration and within a few hours the DNS gets updated and the process is complete.

You don’t use www. with these domains.  For example, for the domain “search-engine” your full address is actually http://search-engine .  But remember you will only need to type the words “search-engine” into the address bar of your browser, because when you press the Enter key the http:// is automatically added.  It all seems rather neat.  Simply type in two words, separated by a dash.

At the moment, in order to see DASHCOM domain names, you’ll need to upgrade your browser.  The APP is available free on participating ISP sites and is valid for IE, FF and Chrome (solutions for MACs and mobiles are in the pipeline).

Ultimately, domain names come down to memory - the memory of other people who are trying to recall your site.  In other words, try the Entrepreneurs’ Storefront Test.   Ask some friends to list as many websites as they can in 60 seconds and you find that most will only come up with 5 or 10 names  (and that includes the obvious ones like Google, Facebook, YouTube, Yahoo plus maybe one or two adult sites).  In a world of 200 million dot com domains, the easy-to-remember DASH-COM has got a lot to say.

I’m, told there are negotiations with ISPs and other parties to get DASH-COM domains resolvable on the Net without the use of the APP.  If that happens, these names would shoot up in value and could be worth something.

They require a fee for renewal. I was wondering how much is this fee?

    Brian,

The domains seem to be free only initially.

The Terms indicate there will be a fee for renewals but I couldn’t find anything regarding the amount.

Any info on renewal or other forthcoming fees?

Thank you, young man. I picked up a few that are key to my existing websites.

Not sure what to do with them yet, but I suppose it will come clear.

BTW, no credit card was required. At this point, a cc requirement would have been a deal killer, given that the webmaster is unknown to me.

I don’t what the future holds for this concept, but is certainly worth a shot.

    Again, THANKS.

    ;)

@Mark – Yep – was just thinking that. Think I even registered a bunch of New.net names when they first launched. And don’t get me started on .web and Realnames :)

@Brian – As long as they are free, I guess it might be worth a few minutes to cover your bases, but I’m pretty skeptical based on a few similar alternate registries I tried back in the nineties. That said, if any of the alternate registries ever makes a deal with a major browser to have their plugin come as the default these types of domains could be a possible source of traffic and have some value.

    Hello

We wanted to write and thank you all for your interest in this post. We really do appreciate it.

We also wanted to take this opportunity to provide some additional information as well as answer some of your questions.

    1) There are no plans to introduce any costs charges for DASHCOM domain names and it is anticipated that they will remain free for the foreseeable future.

    2) For the first time, individuals have the option to create their own TLDs.

    3) Domain names can be registered in any language.

    4) The number of Domains a user may hold is not limited.

    5) At any time, you as a DASHCOM domain holder may make free transfer (or sell) any of domains that you hold.

    6) On the subject of New and Alternate Domains, you may have read only yesterday the news about Peter Sunde of Pirate Bay.

Mr Sunde has been speaking openly about the need for an Alternate Domain Name System that is free from ICANN’s influence and charges.

    7) The drive for more flexibility on the Internet continues to evolve and grow in all directions. Indeed, we have members and users in over 90 countries worldwide. Global demand now forces the pace.

    Thanks again

    Dashworlds Team

You have to install their software to be able to use and view the dash domains. Kind of vague about what they consider to be “non-personally identifiable technical or distribution information”. Tracking possibility??? I registered one but didn’t install the browser software. I’m skeptical.

    Interesting post!

Any idea why adaware is blocking dashworlds.com, saying it is a dangerous site? Are we sure there is no malware, etc being installed?

Awesome post! I hadnt seen these before.

I also remember .web, RealNames as DomainTweeter mentioned. Dashworlds seems like an awesome concept whos time has come!

Think about it… I could easily hear radio commercials promoting these. And people would remember them too. Where the consumer can easily remember the domain, it ups the chances they will try it out which equals more type ins for us marketers.

Good luck DashDomains. Please keep us posted on the progress and what steps we could take to get them into a browser like Chrome or Firefox.

    Thanks,
    -Matt

    Thanks for the post Brian.

I registered quite a few of these domains.

For this to be successful, the major browsers would definitely have to support it.

If browser support is added, then this could take off like a rocket. Without browser support however, this will never reach the critical mass required for success.

A very clever idea, it will be interesting to see how this progresses.

    Dear All
Thank you again for your posts.

Firstly, may we assure everyone here that Dashworlds APP/software contains absolutely NO viruses, trojans or spyware of any kind. (Certainly, we will be in contact with Adaware to advise them of their error).

    2) Dashworlds (and others) are already talking to ISPs and Browser makers re DASHCOMs.

    3) We have to say – and we MUST apologise if we appear to be in any way surprised – but since this post and your comments TEENDOMAINER, we have seen an intriguing response to registrations. Yes, that’s a compliment :)

    4) Even in this short time there seems little doubt. Your interest (and any “passing of the news”) has simply served to compound the pressure in negotiations to incorporate full DASHCOM DNS integration globally.

Once again, we really appreciate your time and interest.

    Kind regards

    Dashworlds Team

    UPDATE:

ISPs can now link-in directly to DASHCOM DNS.

This simple free link-in provides all users of an ISP with the added capability to instantly resolve all DASHCOM domains at network level (ie: no need for app/browser upgrade).

Details of link-in can be found on the FAQ page at http://dashworlds.com (or contact Dashworlds via email for further information)

Coming up: ISPs will have the option to offer DASH-COM domains directly to their customers.

    Pass it on :)

    Thanks

I registered a name the other day and just saw today that it expires in 3 months. ???
I registered several more today also(just in case this flies) and they all expire in 6 months. ??? I’m wondering what the re-renewal fee will be and for how long it will be good for. Any discount for those who get in early and help to promote the site? I would pay 50 cents a name to keep mine until -com becomes more popular and is accepted by mainline domainers. Possibly a dollar or two after the first renewal and then maybe up to $5.00 a name after then IF there is a market for -com names. Until then, they are just little more than “virtual” domain names. Not to say that you can’t make money in virtual items (look at Everquest and other fantasy role playing auction sites). It has the potential to be much greater once it becomes established.
All in all, I think it is a great concept if isps and browsers can support it without the software. Below is a link to their privacy policy.
    http://www.dashworlds.com/src/privacy.php?P=privacy
My concern is Dashworlds software might gather information as some toolbars do.
As long as their browser software doesn’t track our browsing habits, then I’m OK with it and wish them the best of success. It would be great also if they had some kind of affiliate program that pays in free name renewals or something. Perhaps even monetary rewards once they start charging us for renewals. They’ve put a lot of time and work into the concept so I really do hope it will be all that it can be and we’ll make some serious money.
Maybe if they had a dash com auction area on their site things would pick up.
I registered some .COs during the .CO landrush and am still waiting to see how it goes with them before investing too much in new extensions.
I’ll keep registering some -coms as long as they are still free and don’t go up in price too much. Make us proud (and rich), Dashworlds.

    Hi Domainian

Thank you very much for your post and for your comments.

    1) May we ask you to send an email to us at Dashworlds with your user details so we may investigate. Registrations should be for 1 year. Renewals are free

    2) We would like to assure you that Dashworlds software contains no Virus, Trojan or Spyware of any kind. Furthermore, there is absolutely no gathering of information (either browser tracking or otherwise).

    3) There are no plans to charge for Dashcom domains, however, you may exchange or trade any of your domains as you wish (at no cost to you).

    4) In the future there will be options for users to act as registrars and to offer DashCom domains directly on their own websites.

    Kind regards

    Dashworlds Team

A quick clarification note for our USA friends regarding 1 year Domain registrations and their expiry dates:

Apologies, there may be some confusion.

At the moment expiry dates are shown in European Format which means that a date such as 01/12/2011 is actually the 1st December 2011 (and not January 12th, 2011)

    Thanks and regards

I registered a hand full of domains is there anyway to have some type of whois info where user can possibly contact owners of domains they may be interested in, I would also like to know how can domain parking companies support DashCOM parking options. I noticed the domains expire in 1yr will there be an option on the site to renew these domains? And if so will there be an renewal fee?

“…will there be an renewal fee?”

    Rob,

I received an email from DashWorlds recently (but cannot find it) which said due to multiple requests Who Is will be established.

If you read the comments above from the DashWorlds rep regarding renewal fees, you’ll see:

    From Comment # 7:
“There are no plans to introduce any costs charges for DASHCOM domain names and it is anticipated that they will remain free for the foreseeable future.”

    From Comment # 15:
    ” Renewals are free”

“There are no plans to charge for Dashcom domains…”
