Amazon Affiliate Program Not My 1st Choice

Warning: Illegal string offset 'keywords_time' in /home1/theman37/public_html/ on line 103

I know many people use the Amazon affiliate program on their mini sites and it works alright, but on my sites it has not done nearly as well as eBay Partner Network.

The great thing about the amazon affiliate program is that everyone trusts and knows amazon. They also have almost every product known to man and even some more.

The bad part the click through rate on my amazon banner and image ads is half of the eBay ads using PhpBay. The Click through rate when I just use a text link is a little higer but still the sales are lower.

The commission rates start at 4% and go up to 8% and still eBay converts better on my sites. I think it is because with ebay auctions there is a time limit. The auction may end and then the user will miss out on the deal. With amazon the item will always be there. Ebay is also associated with  great deals so mentally people think they will get a better deal on eBay.

When trying to decide to go with ebay or Amazon programs at the moment eBay seems to be outperforming Amazon.

What do you use on you minisites?

They key to making the big money is to not worry about the conversion rate so much but get the big volume of traffic that will convert to a bunch of cash at even a low conversion rate.

I agree with what you say though about conversion rates and reasons why b/t the two.

I’ve never had amazons program work for me. It might be the nature of my sites though.

But I’ve never used ebay’s program. I stick with adsense, affiliate programs, and direct ad sales.

I’m totally in the same boat as you. I’ve been quite successful with eBay (I absolutely love their affiliate program) but have had major challenges making sales with Amazon. It’s actually one of my 2009 goals to launch some new mini sites and make Amazon work. I really want to prove to myself that I can do it and also I want the added diversification.

I use Amazon for most of my product related domains, and it has been working out quite OK for me. The Christmas season was especially good, enabling me to get to the higher % of the commission. I haven’t seriously tried out eBay though, so I can’t really compare the two.

One of the bad things with Amazon though is that they only offer check or gift certificate payouts outside the US, which is bad for me here in Sweden. And they have a $15 fee for the checks!
