Barter for Domains and Related Services
In the past week I have bartered in two different domain related transactions. Overall I think that the midevil age barter system is still a useful system and can still work better than cash in certain situations.
With one domain purchase I paid some cash and bartered ad space on my websites. This works out well for me because I get to spend lass cash on the domain and the seller gets ad space that they needed so it works out for both of us.
In another transaction I am buying a few domains in exchange for web design work. I was going to pay cash for the domains but the seller asked if I would be willing to do some design work which is fine by me because I still get the domain, I do not have to spend any cash. The seller gets web development for no cash just trading domain that he needed done and otherwise would have had to pay for.
I think that in the future I might try and do some more barter domain transactions for web design work. You can also trade domains for other domains.
Here are a few important things to remember about bartering
- Make sure the terms are set in paper so you know what you are paying for getting
- Try and thing about the trade into cash to see if you are getting a fair deal
- Remain in contact with the seller and keep up your end of the bargain
Have you done any domain transactions using barter lately?

I bet the tax man would frown on this.

Brian,
I like your strategy – makes a lot of sense to me. I too have been trying some bartering but no big wins yet!
Best,
Ian

I have been checking out a new website/service called Listia.com which is a type of barter for the digital age. I think it is a little young to get a good value and there certainly aren’t any domainers there yet for sure. It might be a good method to unload some names you don’t want to renew perhaps. Basically you get rid of stuff you don’t want for points and use these points to buy stuff you do want. Check it out! I was actually thinking about creating a site similar but Domains only. Jon

Thanks Ian best of luck, and Jonathan that site looks interesting. I always thought of starting a site where people trades names they were going to drop or sold them for a $15 flat rate.

Great idea. I already imagine the sign on the street: “Will work for Domain”.
