Day 1 Mini Site Series- Selection, Setup, Research

Warning: Illegal string offset 'keywords_time' in /home1/theman37/public_html/ on line 103

Today is the first day of the 5 part series I am going to do on building a minisite. So to build a minisite the first thing you need is a domain name. How do I pick my domain names? I have selected 7 product domains to build out this week. Many of them are camping related which is a topic I now quite a bit about. Other are just names I have been waiting to build out for a while. Also from building out other similar websites I know what has worked for me in the past so I look for related sites. I always search google for the term I am going to rank for to see what the competition is like. If there are lots of sites I might write more articles than if I see that I should be able to easily rank high. I try and plan out how I will make money with each site. Its often hard to make money on a site with just information so I love product domain because people are looking for a specific product.

1. 1,300 Searches $2.28 CPC Lots of Ads on Google Search Adsense

2. 1,300 Searches $1.10 CPC Product Sales EPN Ads Wine Program Ads, Reviews

3. 14,800 Searches $.96 CPC EPN Ads and information

4. 8,100 $.79 CPC I own too and it does well so I picked it up EPN and Outdoor Affiliates

5.  480 Searches $2.09 CPC Adsnese, EPN, Amazon,

6.RockClimbingHarnesses .com 2,400 Searches $1.15CPC All of the next 3 are related they will have reviews and product and affiliate offers

7. 880 Searches $1.44 CPC

8. 390 Searches $2.51 CPC

This data was found using the new Google Keyword Tool which has been showing lower search numbers lately.GKT also can show you related terms to try and rank for but that I will save for another day.  But searches are not everything, one of my best names get less than 1,000 searches a month and this name has ranked really well and does much better than many other sites. I would focus on quality names that you know something about. If you see all of my names are exact match domains and all .com. Exact match domain do great in search and they therefore require less SEO effort and time.

The second thing you will need to build out you minisite is hosting. I host with hostgator and have no problems. Make sure your hosting provider has fantastico which makes it easy to install wordpress in only a few clicks. If you want at this time go ahead and install wordpress and get ready for tomorrows mission which is all about the site design.

Hopefully you found a domain that you want to build out and I will see you tomorrow!

    Now that is helpful.

Nice to see a post that is helping folks instead of rehashing someone else’s post about what’s up with Rick Latona in the last five hours, for example.

I hope more domain blogs had useful info. moving forward b/c it is getting stale out there…..very, very stale.

Thanks teen domainer…… as Deke said, it is nice to have someone actually contribute to the domainer community and teach people how to do something. Most of the garbage on these blogs is just gossip crap and sales figures.
I for one have not yet built out a mini site, but now Im going to follow your lead here and see what I can do!
    Thanks !!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for doing this series. I am always interested in seeing a development process from another domainer. Last Thursday, Morgan Linton asked about monetizing product domains in his blog. The type of domain names you have selected is what is recommended by Rob Monster for Epik development. Names of this quality have become increasingly difficult to obtain over the past couple of years.

I read your reference about the discrepancies between the old GAKT and the beta GAKT. A couple weeks ago, I contacted Google about this. Their response was that the new GAKT is Google results only, whereas the old interface has results from all of their search partners. Now that the new interface is out of beta, the original GAKT was discontinued.

The person I spoke with for my AdWords account suggested that a more accurate representation could be found in their GATE tool, Google Adwords Traffic Estimator. This is what they recommend merchants use for an approximation of cost. Now that the new GAKT is live, GATE can be selected on the GAKT page. GATE still has a previous interface available, however, as the new GATE is still in beta.

Unlike the GAKT, there are no check boxes for broad match, exact phrase, and exact term only, but the same entry methods still work. Your key phrase in quotes returns results for Match Exact Phrase, using brackets is Match Exact Term Only, a minus sign is still Don’t Match This Term, and typing just the phrase is a Broad Match.

Anyway, why you choose to use WordPress for your minisite?
Doesn’t it mean you need upgrade the software regularly?
Isn’t it better to use static HTML, so no need to upgrade anything?

@Michael Thanks, best of luck and I’m always willing to answer any questions,

@Ken Thanks for that great info I will have to take a look at the new tool

@Jenie Yes I will be sharing all of the revenue. Sites I have built in the past earn from $5 a month up to over $50 it all depends. I like how many plugins and themes wordpress has and it makes it really easy to update your site.

Just curious about url’s. How much better is than when it comes to setting up these sites?

As you know finding short specific domain names are tough these days.
