End User Calls in Progress…

Today we have off of school for Thanksgiving Monday, which is really so the international students have time to fly back. Normally calling end users is tricky for me because I am at school during normal business hours and by the time I get home most  business are also closed.

So I decided today is the perfect time to try and sell a few names. I have already made almost 10 calls.

About 5 were to law firms and I got the secretaries at the front desk. I guess most lawyers do not get to work right at 9:00 and 2 others were in court so I left my name and number. Then I talked to another person who really did not seem to happy I was trying to sell her a domain name to help her business, but O well.

But overall I am feeling good I may have 1 maybe 2 names sold and its still early.

My script is short and simple

Hello My Name is Brian Diener and I am the owner of (Insert Domain Name Here) This name is valuable because... Searches, direct navigation, SEO benefits, Brand recognition, easy to remember ... Whatever works for the specific name.

I find that people who will not buy a name will just tell you to shut up right away, so if I get through my pitch I am feeling good. Then I have gotten many questions about how to proceed from there with payment and moving the domain. One end user said he would love to buy the domain but he quote "is from the stone age" and has no clue how so I am going to help him through the process.

From my experience calling an end user is often times a better way to get through. Often people forget to reply to an email or it gets lost in the flood in their inbox. You can not ignore someone on the other end of a phone. Use this as encouragement and pick up the phone and try and sell some names.

After I call I will send an email to people who say they are interested saying thanks for talking on the phone here is the next step with links and easy to follow directions, this way you do not have to explain everything over the phone. It takes time but you have to keep calling.  If you do call today tell me how it goes

I’m thinking of outsourcing some of my end user calls – using oDesk. I too have problems calling during normal working hours so outsourcing may be a good option.

Just my opinion but I would change what you say on the phone. You got to remember, the end user have zero knowledge. e.g what direct navigation i etc?. You will put them to sleep or want them to hang up. Also, natural selling/story is better that talking like some radio advert. Just wrote the below on the fly, needs work on.

“Hello My Name is Brian Diener and I am the owner of e.g NewYorkLawyers.com. Its a domain name that I had hope to develop into a lead generation website but just haven’t had any time. Today, I thought I would sell it to the first company that provides the most realistic price. PAUSE/QUESTIONS
The Reason why it is a good domain name, is google favors keyword rich domains. So with this domain name its easy to get to the top of google for the money making terms like “new york lawyers”. Its also a really great purchase for you as it gets direct navigation, which is when people actually just type the name into their browser by-passing the search engines like google and these type of visitors convert really well into customers as they know what they want, hence they have just typed the domain name themselves into their browsers. Its also a competitive edge having a domain name that gets direct navigation as there is only one newyorklawyers.com out there. Also its a cheap way for you to get customers too.

I put up a contact form last week and have got 6 inquires for people seeking lawyers this week alone. It would be a cheap way for your company to get new customers.

Pause , Do you have any questions?

I will be selling it on a first in first serve basis. Are you interested in making an offer today? “then shut up and wait for them to talk”

Then start swearing at them, and hang up the phone when they don’t want to make an offer. Just kidding.

Great post Brian and I absolutely agree that the phone is a much better way to close deals.

I also agree with @Rosco that you do have to change your script a bit to fit your audience.

I’ve found Law Firms, Dentist Offices, and Doctor Offices all are tricky to get direct access to a decision-maker. One of the best approaches I’ve used is going in-person…but this only works with hyper-local geos.

Let me know how it goes, I know many people that spend 3-4 hours/day calling end-users to sell domains and it can sometimes take weeks before they either sell or move-onto another name.

It’s important to remember how much your time is worth. Just make sure you’re not making 10-12 hours of phone calls to sell a few hundred dollars in domains. The sweet spot for end-users that you’re cold calling are really in the $300 – $600 range so you need to close them quick to make it worth your time.

Still Brian you are WAY ahead of anyone your age and you can do anything you put your energy into!

I do change it up depending on the end user but I like what you wrote I will give it a try soon.

You could also add, ” I see your companies website is currently ranking on page 3 of google for the money making keyword phrase “New York lawyers”, everyone knows that you need to be on page 1. Or don’t bother”
Stick it where it hurts. Maybe you can get some SEO business out of it, Charge them $50 dollars a month for some basic seo maintenance.

Phone is definitely a good option. I have done it with email for a long time but find it is dropping off more and more as I think many are getting picked up as spam or simply ignored. At least with the telephone you know that you have made contact and know an answer right away.

Also agree that technical stuff is a no-no when calling. In the end all that potential customers care about is whether it will have the potential to gain them more customers and earn them more money.

Have you had any luck? Did anyone contact you back? I was thinking about doing this for some of my domains but need to start small – I like what you are going and wish you the best of luck!
