I thought Minisites were Dead, but Maybe Not…

All over the domain world we have seen how thing go from parking, to minisites and mass development, and now there are many people who have said that minisites are dead especally after the google panda update. And I still think that some types of minisites are not going to be a profitable way to make money, but some minsities can still make nice money.

First it depends on how you define a minisite. If you are talking about a quickly done, copied content of low quality, without any seo then yea those are really dead.

But unlike some people say and I though so too, all small minisites running adsense are not dead. I took a site with 4 unique articles, a little bit of search volume, and turned it into a site that has avgered $4 a day on adsesne this month with 2-3 leads coming in every day via the contact forum.

$4 a day might not seem like much but after only putting less than $50 into the site, its a ton of money. Thats an extra $120 a month and almost $1500 a year! When I built out these minisites I built out 4 of them out and this is the one that has taken off.

The site is Rent a Cargo Van and it gets all of its traffic from long tail searches. It is getting from 10-40 visitors a day and they are converting really well. I think that is because the name is so specific.

Now that I know this site is going to do well I am going to build it out by adding more unique articles and links to the site. I am also trying to get on van rental affiliate programs which I think it could make a lot more money on.

This example just goes to show you that small minsites can and do still make people money you just have to develop the name the right way and pick the right names. Once you see that a name takes off you also need to build it bigger to capitalize on the visitors!

Extra cash is always good. I have a mini site that cost me ~$25 and it’s making between $20 – $30 a month.

The good part is that I don’t have to work on it any longer. It’s not the greatest site but it brings in some extra cash wo/ any additional work or investments.

If a search phrase has low competition (use search phrase in quotes as a guide) and decent search volume, a minisite may have a chance. If there are millions of search results, making it to page one of Google is going to be difficult and a few pages of content and no high PR backlinks is unlikely to get you there.

I agree with leonard. I have a couple of great domain names movecar.org and buy-insurance.org that does not get much traffic because the terms are competitive and already have establish site with similar name. But just because google doesn’t give me love first mean I can’t find love on my own. There is many ways to skin a cat. Search is only one of them. Don’t let search discourage u. U don’t have to be the best looking to get the hottest girls.

Good post Brian, right on and nothing is dead. Some when they change their agenda come out and say what they used to like is no longer viable. Nonsense.

Uncle is right that there is more than one way to get it done.

Brian, I agree. A few pages of quality content and a couple links is often all you need for low-competition niches.

For the cargo van site, have you found an outlet for the leads that are coming in via your contact form?

Great post Brian I dont think minisites are dead either I think that what happens is the net is always moving and Google being a market leader moves with it. We as domainers and developers have to adjust and look at those other ways to skin a cat like poor uncle talked about.

I recently purchased a domain name in the hopes of developing it into a content mini site. The domain name is Boxingheadgear.com Any suggestions on how I can monetize this name?
