Minisite in a Week: Day Two Minisite Design

If you ready my blog you already know that I use wordpress for all of my minisites. I do this for a few reasons and I think you should to if you are not super skilled with custom code.

WordPress makes it so easy to add content, optimize your site for the search engines, find a great theme, and expand you site with the thousands of plugins.

The first step of minisitite is to make sure you have hosting. I have been using hostgator plan where I have all of my sites on one account. I would recommend a host that has an easy way to install WordPress like fantastico. With that you can install WordPress in 3 clicks and no technical work.

Once you have wordpress installed you can start to look for a theme. I normally choose a two colum design that can use widgets. A few of my favorite sites to look are, WooThemes, and Studiopress. There are also thousands of free themes just search google.

For many of my sites I use a program called Artisteer which is amazing tool to build wordpress themes without a lot of hard work. (Yes that is an affiliate link)

I like to make my colors of the theme match the content. A site about camping I will throw in some earth colors. I keep them simple easy to read so they do not distract from the site but add to the overall feel and design. The background can be grey, white or another color I normally like to add a gradient to it.

Somewhere between 12-14 point font for the normal content works. I like Verdana and Arial font types. It’s also nice to have some nice H1, H2, and H3 tags so you can style your post and make them easy to read.

After you have a theme you are going to need a logo or header. If you do not have photoshop there is a great free program called GIMP that can do almost the same stuff for free. It’s a great tool. If you do not want to design your own headers I would look on a site like odesk or even the namepros web designers for hire page and look for someone. You can easily find someone to do a fitting job for $10. Remember this is a minisite you do not need a $100 logo. If you do plan on building the site a little bigger spend a little more on a logo. Heck, I have even seen sites do just fine without a logo at all.

Here are some examples of the site designs I am going to use

I hope you will share the theme you choose below and will build your sites with me this week. Tomorrow we will cover the most important part of a site the content. I might share the rest of my themes later today when I finish them. Enjoy!

How hard is it to use Gimp? Do you know of any web tutorials or resources that would help us learn how to quickly create a simple banner?

Try YouTube. Still take some time to make it as nice as teendomainer. Let’s just say I spent an hour looking at tutorial and working on my banner…..and my banner didn’t look anywhere as nice as his.

If you do not want to mess around with GIMP or photoshop (we learned to use it a little in school) I would drop $5 or $10 for a nice designer.

Just curious if you have any thoughts on Joomla or Drupal for development. I am under the impression that WP is more difficult to get a top search result for.

    Hi Brian,

I was looking at a few of your sites and I like what you have done. Keep up the good work. I just wanted to shoot you a quick comment to let you know that the sitemap link on the homepage of your stump grinder site is not working. I know Google likes sitemaps and does not like broken links so I thought I would let you know.

    Take care,

    Great post.

I would add that for creating nice simple logos you can use MS Word (use the type warp function, where you can create 3d typology). It’s an easy and fast trick to get a decent logo.
