Minisites Have Been Working for Me

Last month was my best month ever with my minisites. A little over a month ago I build out some new minsites and they are just starting to get ranked higher. I have done a little updating, but mostly the sites have sat untouched.

Lately it seems like people have been kind of down on minisites and I understand why. A Minisite will not pay all of your bills and one would be foolish to even think anything like that. There is no "mass solution" for any domain. Each one of my ministes is different because of the possibilities that specific name presents.

It only takes me a few hours to do a site from start to finish and it is well worth the time. I see no point in paying someone to do something that I can do myself. I use wordpress, a article writer, customize a theme, do a little SEO and wahala.

On to some specifics

I never expected much from ministes.

In total now I have 11 mini sites (plus 3 other minisites that have grown so I don't count them anymore) and those 11 sites brought in $117 last month.

I have 3 sites that generate most of their revenue from adsense. I have seen adsense earning go up lately and my clicks are getting bigger. My advice for these is develop names with high CPC because even if you have a ton of traffic .05 a click takes a while to add up. Most of my clicks are over $1.  Each adsense site gets less that 20 visits a day 100% from search engine and still makes good money. From the 3 sites and a few other occasional clicks I generated around $50 (I don't know if I am allowed to share specifics).

The other 8 minisites are all product related domains running on the eBay Partner Network. I am averaging around 13 cents a click and this made up almost all of the rest of last months minisite profit. The names are ranking well for their exact terms as well as longer tail searches. Traffic is up month over month in all but one of the names. Like the other sites almost all traffic is from search engines. Something to note is I had one of the names on a smartname shop before building a site on it so it was already indexed and generated revenue the first day it was live. So if you are planning to put a minisite up try and get it indexed by using whypark or smartname in the meantime.

I also made a few extra bucks selling a link, and an ad spot on a minisites. I am going to try and get this number higher in the coming months so I am not so reliant on Google and eBay. I am also testing a few affiliate programs now to see how they convert.

So 11 names divided by the $117 I made comes out to $10.63 per name per month. I think that is great that is $127 per year per name. I'm only 17 years old I need a little extra cash to cover gas and dinner once and a while so minisites are great for me. Now I am working on building more and more to increase the income every month but I think I have my method worked out pretty well. Ask me any questions please. How are your minisites doing?

    Thanks for sharing.

A have a few sites generating monthly rev.
Ex. ConversionVans.net is netting around $250 each month – on autopilot. Have a few others as well that are going well.

That’s right Tim, it’s all about making a dollar a million times, not making a million at once. Scale, scale, scale once you find something that works.

    Nice article.

To me it sounds like you are doing great, I started my first site in 1998 and now I have over 200 site, some of my site only make a few dollars a month and some make me a few thousand a month, the key is to keep adding sites.

It’s great to hear that you are having some success with minisites. There is a lot of misinformation being tossed around (“Minisites don’t work! PPC/Adsense is dead!”).

Also, thanks for being willing to back up your claims with actual dollar figures… I wish more domainers would be this forthcoming!

Advice: don’t talk about it or the big G will close your account. I agree definitely don’t take the approach of being dependent upon G and E for revenue. I’m even afraid to mention their names. I’ve been in the fedex club(10,000 checks) with both and shut down by both, its not hard, its hard to keep the accounts open!
General model should be direct advertising sales, sell the ads on a monthly rate yourself and just back fill with affiliate programs. Hard to spend months building out and growing just to get shut down overnight. YOU take the drivers seat instead, best of luck.

My mini sites are also doing well.
I am making around $350 a month from them.

Three things I have noticed lately.
First is getting good product domains for a decent price has become relatively hard.
Just a few months back I had my choice at 10-70 dollars. Now its more like 70-150.
    Two
I have also noticed google has been bouncing my mini sites around. So some days i make money others I do not.
    Three
    Bing loves mini sites.

Ps I built around 20 mini sites for halloween and I netted 500 dollars for about 10 hrs of work and a 300 dollar investment.
I am already thinking about ways to increase click through to the affiliate program. I think I can double earnings next year.

    Hey Teen Domainer,
I really enjoy reading your blog and I believe you are one of the most helpful domainers who writes in the industry, and you’re only 17!! You share your methods and you are transparent about how your sites do, my hat goes off to you.
I am new to domaining, been doing it a year or so, and I really need to figure out how to do some of the small technical stuff so I can build out my sites….
you say “It only takes me a few hours to do a site from start to finish and it is well worth the time. I see no point in paying someone to do something that I can do myself. I use wordpress, a article writer, customize a theme, do a little SEO and wahala.”
But for someone who doesnt know how to do a little seo, or how to target keywords for articles or any of the EASY basic stuff to do, its tough.
Cheers to you though, your bound to do well. I just want to pump out 100-200 mini sites that make $10 a pop and that would be awesome, thats the game plan

    @TeenDomainer
Yes all the sites are specific two word costume domains.
You can see one I linked from my name,

Im pretty happy with the results although I think I can do 2-3 times the revenue by tweaking the page to get more click through to the affiliate.
In this case I will be removing adsense as clicks to the affiliate program are worth more than adsense.

Well, you’re lucky with such high CPC ads. I experienced with one minisite, and even if i get arround 50 uv per day, earnings are pretty low. ~20E per month / less than .05 per click

    Again, you’re lucky :)

    @Brian,
I also park my domains with whypark before developing it if I ever get around to do it. Some of my domains with whypark have quite a bit of traffic (300+ per month). Do you experience having less traffic once you build it out into a minisite and move it out of whypark?
