Results of Physical End User Letters :(

Well in short they were not great. I sent out 13 letters and not one name has sold. I had one small offer on one name and am still talking with another person about a name but it seems to be going nowhere.

Although it's not great news that the letters did not go so well, its not the end of the world. Selling names to end users it not an easy process and you have to keep going. Its about determination, if you pick the right names to offer for sale after enough emails you will have success.

Even though no names sold I am not going to give up at all, I might even try harder to sell the name now. My plan is now to call up some of the end users and also find more ones to target. Maybe letters are too old school or people don't trust them. I still think phone calls are the best way to go, but they really do not work because I am in school during the business day.

Sometimes you can send and talk to 30 end users and not produce and sales, but then the next 3 emails can all result in sales. That is what I love about selling to end users you never really know what is going to happen.

One of my goals for 2011 was to sell more domains to end users and also domainers. Sometimes if you can not find an end user it makes sense to sell to another domainer.

The point of this post is encourage others to keep trying and update you on how my end user letters went. I'm going to keep my head up and hopefully I will have some good sales to report.

Good initiative to send out 13 letters, I think that’s great. Physical mail is a very good way to reach end-users.

My only piece of feedback is 13 letters is not enough. In my real estate days I would send out 5,000 letters a week. I’m not saying you have to do that with domain names, but maybe 200 would be a better number per domain name. Of course the domain name has to be worth he time and postage.

Indeed, its not the end of the world…it was all an experiment. Selling by its nature is not easy, you just don’t need to give up and your attitude will pave ways for other willing buyers.

In my opinion printed letters never work and letter sending is money wasting.I tried this type of advertising in my other business: we have sent out a few thousand of them and ROI was minimal: after all the expenses we could hardly break even. The only way the letters would work is if they would be handwritten. That would give them a personal touch.People tend to throw away printed letters: they just consider it as a junk mail. Think about it: what would you do if you would receive a printed letter from someone you don’t know? It wouldn’t go further than my trash can, that’s for sure. On the other hand, letters that are handwritten will be open and people will read them anyway( even out of curiosity).I didn’t read your earlier posts, so I apologize if this comment is not totally related to the whole series of posts, but if you want to learn more about different selling methods you should check out Jason there has a lot of posts about selling domains to the end users. Thanks

    Letters work.

Alot depends on how you sell. Are you selling an internet domain name? If so, who cares? We already have one.. haven’t you seen our website?

Don’t sell a domain or a feature –sell a BENEFIT.

I believe one has to experiment with different approaches, test, see what works best and expand on initiatives which produce better results. Sometimes one just has to be patient or work harder. Sometimes however one needs to realize that a particular approach is not a good use of one’s limited time.

Don’t get discouraged. It’s tough. It’s always difficult to make a sale. Just remember you don’t need many to make the effort worthwhile.

Domain sales is not easy. Direct mail marketing isn’t either. Ask anyone in the “Junk Mail” business and they’ll tell you the small percentage that bite the hook. I commend you for trying the snail mail route.

@ Everyone thanks, I don’t view it as a failure and I am going to be sending out more letters soon. I will need to send out a ton more and get no sales from them and then I will see if it is worth it.

@ Rk I have had success sending letters before but great point about handwriting letters I might have to try that.

Yes, it is often difficult to get responses from end users at times but it’s worth trying if the domain is good enough.

I always believe that in everything you try to pursue, you need to look forward to failures in order to correct them and try harder to overcome them.

I personally liked the physical letter concept you did back then and it’s quite sad that you didn’t get much positive response. Maybe a more captivating letter? A unique approach of it being a physical letter? Something more creative than a header and an offer probably… I don’t know, just some ideas.

Anyway, I hope you try to pursue this further and gain better luck via this approach next time :)
