This chart shows how quickly some of the recent "fad" domains (.mobi, .tel, .me) quickly spiked and then faded out:
http://www.google.com/trends?q=.tv%2C+.mobi+%2C+co.uk%2C+.me%2C+.tel&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=1

I think the main point is to be extremely cautious with any future new extensions that come out, especially the non ccTLDs that will get pushed out in the future. Public awareness is nowhere near what it has to be to support all the current TLDs as well as the new TLDs that will inevitably come.

That being said, if you have a good business plan and enough marketing muscle you can develop any TLD into a successful site. There are exceptions to every rule but, currently, the easiest path to success is .com, .net, .org and the handful of strong ccTLDs of which I would include .TV.

IMO the equation is quite simple. The more there will be some new TLDs the stronger .com .net .org and ccTLDs should become (as established references in the jungle) and the weaker other TLDs should become. With ICANN planning for liberalization and soon introduction of a bunch of new TLDs, I think this point should at least be taken into account in investment strategies.

John

Thanks for the comment, I know their are exception and there may have been one major ad campaign in south Florida with a .info, but nationwide do people use .com's or .info's?

I think everyone knows that answer.

I am also talking about the value of names not what people are registering. Someword.net or Someword.org will always be worth more to me than someword.info.

Thanks for reading and sharing your opinion.

Brian:

I hate to burst your bubble, but a major ad campaign was just run in the Fort Lauderdale, Florida area using a .info extension. I don't remember the name of the company because your post did not appear until after the ads started appearing.

Furthermore, I don't think many agree with you. If you look at the following site, you will see the number of people registering .info domains far exceeds the registration of names under .org, .biz, and .us.

I think other TLD's are great to use. For example, Dot TV, Dot FM....both of these are easy to remember. I would prefer Cameras.fm than myCameras.com.

@Mike Yea .TV has really grown especially with all of the online video. I think it could be come a great hit especially if some more big names get behind it. I think its way better the the .info, or .biz or .us. I am not a huge fan of the .us. I think Americans will always use the .com.

It's still amazing to me what .tv sells for in relation to co.uk, .info, .biz, etc

Looking at this chart, .tv is the second most 'searched' extention. Can this be the best 'value' extention today??

Take a look at the google trends comparing .info .net .com .tv and .biz. I think the graph shows something important.
