I have always been a huge fan of product domain names and I continue to be, because of the great potential they have to be built out. I have already gone through the process of building out many product domains and I wanted to share one tip I have learned after experimenting and looking at the results.

Writing content for product sites is not that different from any other typical minisite, but there are a few things you can do with your content that will help your site preform better.

To show you the difference I am going to use two of my sites as examples. The first site 3SeasonTent.com was one of the first sites I developed. The other site is 4seasonTent.com which I developed in the middle of last year. Both of the names are similar with design and search stats but the main difference is their content.

4 Season Tent is full of general articles like  3 Person 4 Season Tent, Lightweight and Ultralight 4 Season Tent’s, 4 Season Backpacking Camping Tent, which are great articles that generate some traffic from search engines, but no where near to the success that 3 season tent has had.

3 season tent site is full of review articles like Eureka Apex 2XT 3 Season Tent Review, and Eureka Zeus 2 Tent Review. Most of the articles on the site are reviews of actual products that rank first, second, or third in the search engines.

The review articles of actual products drive much more traffic to the site and convert much better then the general articles because the traffic is much more targeted and people are searching for the specific tent reviews.

For example, if you are going to write about netbooks, don't just write generic articles, write an exact review of a netbook. For ideas take a look at amazon or ebay reviews and youtube video reviews if you do not have the product yourself.

If you are hiring other people to write for you just pick some of the bestsellers on amazon and tell them to write a review about them, just make sure they do not copy the reviews.

On my sites I try and write a few general articles and then month by month add on review articles as new products hit the market. Has anyone else has similar results with review articles?

    Hi,

    Great information here.

Where did you get the reviews for 3 Season Tent? They are well written and informative.
    Did you write them yourself?

Great observations. If you own a product domain name, the best monetization approaches are to write product reviews or provide a way for shoppers to buy the product.

Great stuff, Brian…it is important to have a good plan for how to develop content for each site you build.

Thanks for the analysis and insight! Great that you realized the difference something like that would make. So, are you getting content for the other one to match or is it worth the effort?

Thanks for sharing ! I have around 50 (parked) product names and was recently thinking how to develop them. You inspired me to get to work. Can You just share , if You don’t write some reviews Yourself , who is ? Are You using TextBrokers or something else ? Thank You again !

I find writers on namepros, odesk, or rentacoder.com and first try them out and if I like the results I keep on using them. I have heard great things about text brokers but I can buy copy cheaper.

Great points. I have many product domains and I’ve so far held off developing them while focusing on more information based sites. However I will soon be getting to work on the product based domains and see that what you say would be very true since people often search for brands and models and those people will convert much better. Another great place to find very good content writers is textbroker.com
