Do you own yourname.com? Some people cringe at the extra registration fee every year, but not owning youname.com could end up costing you much more than the $10.00 a year.

Not only is yourname.com a great place to showcase a portfolio of your work and websites, it is unique to you. It is perfect to have a small personal blog with a about me page. This could be very important when you are looked at to be hired for a job. You could put a great resume on the site. It does not matter what profession you are in, you will always be identified by your name.

When people go to look at someone today they go to Google. They type in your name and click on the first result that comes up. You want the first result to be owned by you so that you can control what it says. No one wants the first result on Google when searching for their name to be about another person of the same name. It would be even worse if a complaint about the person came up first. This could end up costing you a job one day if it was bad enough.

You should register your name today because what if someone else is reading this with the same name as you and they register it? You do not want to have to buy your name from someone because it will end up being much more expensive.

In conclusion go to your favorite domain registrar and buy yourname.com and set it to auto renew. If you want put up a small site with an about yourself page and some links to your sites.

Back in 1998 when I registered my first domain I should have registered my name also. by the time I got around to seeing if it was available the .com was taken so I had to settle on the .net Oh well, live and learn

Its good idea to have yourname.com. When I checked last year for kashif.com, it was not available. Even .net, .org and info are also gone. What do you recommend in this case?

I would try and get yourfirstnameandlastname.com then. I have BrianDiener.com. Brian that just shows people that they should act now and grab their names while they last. Now we all have to think about the .tel too. I will do an article sometime this week on if it is important to have and why so.

    Thanks for reading

Unfortunately I don’t own my firstlastname.com, as it’s already owned by someone. I did make them an offer a while back, but it was turned down immediately.

I do have my namelastname.info though – in my opinion the 2nd best after the .com for this type of domain.

Also, it is key to have yourname.com because if you should ever want to rank for your name in Google then owning yourname.com is half the battle and makes ranking a whole lot easier.

Good post Brian. If a person is going to be involved on the Internet and maintain an obvious presence it is important to have their name registered as a domain.

I did it few years back. I wasn’t sure sure if I wanted to spend the extra money, especially because my name is spelled differently so I had to register the normal and my way of spelling my name. What got me over my hesitation was the long term benefit factor.

I thing that the main reason a public figure would want to own their name domain is to prevent haters from registering it and abusing the name and reputation of that person.

For years I tried to acquire my firstandlastname.com and the owner never responded. I actually sent an offer of $1,000 and never got a reply. About a year later I was buying a name and the registrar said my name was available, I bought it immediately. Recently launched my blog on my name. Also own bruce.me which will be pointed to brucemarler.com
