All of my Minisites Make Money

Except for one which I never really finished, but even that one made $5.51 last year. Last night for some reason I decided to look at my stats on adsense, ebay partner network and other affiliate networks.

At the start of last year, I had 15 minisites up and running and 14 of them paid their own renewal fees last year. Some of the best performing ones made hundreds of dollars and the average site made around $53. While it’s not huge money from one site when you own 20 of them they bring in a nice monthly check. Every few weeks I try and build myself more sites to increase my monthly income.

Why have my minisites all made money? And maybe why yours have not?

I have picked the right names to develop.

I pick what many people call low hanging fruit. I am not trying to rank on the first page of google with a term with hundreds of thousands of exact searches. I target domains with 500 to 5000 exact match searches a month that are easy to rank for in the search engines.

The names I have picked are exact match domains that are easy to monetize. Most are product domains, where the people visiting are looking for the exact product.

I have kept my cost low.

All of these domains were hand registers or have been bought for $40 or less. I don’t hire out someone to build my sites for me, if you do that you can be hundreds in the red to begin with.  I will hire out to write articles, or design a logo but I am always the guy that puts everything together. It’s so much cheaper to hire out the individual tasks and then complete everything yourself. Don’t hire someone out, try and do it yourself and in the long run you will thank yourself. After you build a few you can hire out, but then you know what you can do.

I update them.

Some people set their minisites up and forget them. I don’t spend a huge amount of time on them after setting them up, but I try and update them once a month which adds content and keeps their rankings up. I hire out for some SEO and I do some search engine optimization myself. This is an area I need to get better at.

I don’t just use adsense or amazon.

When I monetize my domain names I use all kinds of methods. I switch around from adsense, amazon, ebay partner network, affiliate programs, and direct advertising depending on the site. I am not dependent on any one program.

If I could take all of my money and spend a few hours of time and a couple dollars and build minisits that took $30 and turned it into $50 year after year I would do it in a heartbeat and I think you would to. Nothing it guaranteed but it sure beats the stock market.

The minisites I am building now are doing even better than the ones that I first built because I have taken what I have learned from this first batch and improved on it. I am happy to answer any questions about building minisites.

Question is, is the ROI profitable with regard to the amount of time you’re putting in?

Without a doubt, the sites are well worth the little time I put in. After setting it up it only takes 15 min a month.

It would seem that most of the time is spent finding new domain names in a very competitive market. How much time do you spend each month on your research of all types (this would include any time spent reading blogs, etc. for new ideas) – or is it all completely automated?

It’s awesome the way you have set your ways on how to make your system as profitable as much as possible with regard to domain and minisite developments. More power, Brian! You’re inspiring me to make a better system out of myself as well ;)

Congrats, Brian. Sounds like you have the right formula working for you. Guess whom I am planning to hire to develop a few mini-sites? :)

Thanks Rob Jeff and Mike it means a ton coming from you guys.

Its not like I am making thousands of dollars month off sites but I just want to show domainers it is possible. It is just all about scale.

Anyway, beside EPN and Amazon, what is the other affiliates you are using?

Thanks for sharing the stats. I just wonder how much less or more money you would have made if you combined all your resource (creativity, time, energy, money) into 1 site rather than 20 sites.

    Uncle Phil,

I’d pitch in for Brian (TeenDomainer). His strategy is great as it diversifies his portfolio. If one is down, he still has the rest. Besides, anything that is lost in the short term will be overtaken in the long term given his dedication of trying to update his minisite at least one a month.

I’m similar in terms of using exact match domains as the basis for building a minisite onto. I focus on buying domains with decent levels of type in traffic in the first place and then develop minisites where the levels of traffic are good enough. Sure, these minisites haven’t made me a millionaire but the revenue from them keeps my domaining in the black or at least breaking even which means I can acquire more domains. Win win!
