Developing One Big Site or Few Small Ones

I am thinking about building out a large site about a topic, but I cannot decide between doing one larger site or doing a few smaller sites in a network. I can see benefits to doing both, and as of right now I do not know which I am going to choose. I look at building one 50 page site vs. building 5, ten page sites.

Large Site

With one large site you can easily establish a big brand name. In the space it can become well known a place that attracts repeat visitors for the wealth of information. Visitors are going to be visiting for a wide range of topics and for individual topics it might be harder to rank well in the search engines. It is much easier to attract direct advertisers. With one site it’s easy to focus on and create new content for. Promotion via advertising and comments is also much easier.  Once the site gets large and a good ranking, articles that you write gain authority easily and rank well.

Smaller Network

With smaller sites the traffic is much more targeted per site. You can use exact match names that will make it easier to rank for each topic. Large direct ad deals will be harder to attract because there is not one website but a network.  Without the brand name visitors might not remember the site and return. It is also harder to focus on each of the sites individually. It is also hard to promote many different sites at once. But with each site you can see which ones get the most traffic and then develop the most successful ones into larger sites.  This also takes longer time to set up and manage.

Decision

Right now I am leaning towards one larger site for a few reasons. I want to build a brand on the internet. I have built tons of little sites and I want to try something new. It will also be easier on me to build just one site and add content. The ease direct advertising on a larger site is also a plus. I will let you know about the name and site in a few days once I get it up and running. I just have so much going on right now and I love it!

**Also I am looking for a theme for stockmarket101.com any ideas?

I believe Google’s recent comments re. content farms does strike a blow to mini-sites, so large sites are the way to go… this is the direction I’m heading this year.

Great post Brian and a question more and more Domainers will be asking themselves this year. At the end of the day it all depends on the niche and keywords you want to rank well for.

If you pick a highly competitive niche a big site is a must and even then it could take a year or more to get on the front page of Google without a serious SEO/Link-Building budget.

Smaller sites are fine for less saturated niches and often get ranked much quicker. That being said these tend to have less long-term potential.

So what am I suggesting? Build a brand and treat it like a real business and you could create a serious income stream for the future…but remember there’s nothing wrong with starting out with a five to ten page site and growing from there. Sometimes having a number of smaller sites can help you better decide which to develop into a full scale online brand.

I like what you’re doing and how you’re thinking! Looking forward to following the adventure!

Didn’t you just buy a stock market 101 domain?

That has very high cost per action…..devote your life to that website.

In 2-3-4 years…it could be a power house and you could do so many different verticals within that name..so you get tired of it and move on to something else, but build out other stuff that is related and keep it under your brand.

Make the smaller sites…just do it for main domain.

If not, I will buy that domain from you….double your money :)

@ Will I am not sure they are going to take out minisites, I am going to still do both big and large sites.

@ Morgan Well said. I am doing that building out small sites and then yes I am going to build the brand. Much of my inspiration comes from your work thanks!

@ Paul Yep I did last week. And I am going to be building it out very soon as soon as I can decide on a template.

I would go with the big site, all of my big site bring in more than my small sites ( and yes in the long run I would say much more than if I built 5 smaller sites.

There is no concept of mini-sites or mega-sites as such. Only parked domains and websites – either with good content or with junk/duplicate/rehashed content.

Whether it’s a branded portal or a niche website, what matters is to provide the visitor something worth their time and money.

@ Charles I think that is what I am going to do although I might make some smaller sites to go along with the big site.

@ Sri Good point anything is better than parking and there are tons of useful sites that are 5 pages.

I would go about building a big site as well. For me, I don’t have the time to manage multiple sites unless the work is outsourced.
You can always branch out smaller sites later.
