Some Short Sunday Statements

As another week ends and a new one begins I wanted to share a few random thoughts and things that went on this week.

On Thursaday I had dinner with the great guys at Bido Jarred and Sahar and the rest of the guys in blue. (The blue bido shirts) David Castello was also at dinner and we had a great time talking. I learned so much in just one night. I want to thank them again for sharing part of their vast knowledge with me.

While we are talking about Bido, I wanted to point out some larger sales they have been reporting. They are really moving the platform to the next level and with the new voting system everyone can make money. I will be talking more about this in another post but for now lets just say I really like the new system and changes at Bido!

Last night at 10:58 PM I sold another domain via Godaddy Premium Listings, if you follow me on twitter, this is my 4th name sold via Godaddy this year. A few days ago I just got my first check from Godaddy in the mail from the sale of the first name. I am really happy about this sales platform the only thing I don't like is the 30% commissions.

On a personal note I ran a half marathon two weeks ago in 1:21 which I was very happy with. All of the 60 mile weeks have paid off but now its back to track season. Last Friday at our meet I broke the 5 min mile which is always fun, now I am just trying to break 10 min in the 2 mile race.

Whats Swine Flu, Obama and Susan Boyle Have to do With Domaining?

Every day I try and go on Namepros and look through what people are talking about and also what people are registering and buying and selling. I only use Namepros not because I don't like any other sites but I just feel I would end up wasting too much of my time. I really like to see the Namepros appraisals section to see what others think of people’s domains.

Lately I have seen way too many trend domains. You should be able to tell but I am not a huge fan of trend domains. Even though SusanBoyle.com is getting lots of traffic right now, in one year will people even remember who she was? If she does not become a famous singer than yes she will be forgotten and the domain will again be almost worthless.

That is my problem with trend domaing, today everything seems to move at light speed what cutting edge yesterday is archaic today. I cannot give value to something that will only maintain its value for a short time period.

I do see a little value in registering the generic name of new technology in the .com or .net to sell to large companies but I have seen names like SusanBoyleExampleKeyword.info for sale! How will that name ever be worth anything unless you develop it into a large site and why in the first place would you develop a .info? A few weeks ago it was Obama names it was all you saw everywhere obama this obama that, searching namebio and ebay, I can find almost no good obama domain name sales.

Right now on eBay there are 7 Swine Flu Names in a package for 20,000 and tons of SusanBoyle names. They are horrible domains without value. SusanBoyle.me sold for $200 on eBay, I just do not see any value in the name. Many people are gambling lots that she makes it big, yet its only the first round of the show. There also might some TM problems with that name if the new owner uses it to profit, but I do not know much about internet law so please correct me if I am wrong.

The point of this post was not to insult any trend domainers but simply to remind people to take a look at the domains they are registering and see if they have any long term value.Don’t get caught up in the trend of the day.

Time to Get Serious About Domaining

Now is the time to get serious about you domaining “hobby” or side job. I am not telling people to quit their day jobs, just to change a few things about the way they handle their domain names. In these times is simply makes sense to take better care of your domains and be smarter about your business. People do not need to look at the economy as a negative, but a positive change that will present them with new opportunities and ideas.

Take a look at all of your domains and make sure you know where all of them are registered and when they expire. Always keep a portfolio up online on your own personal site and put the link around. Take a look over all of your domain names and make sure you renew the names you want to keep and then decide what to do with the names you want to drop. Do not simply let the names drop unless they are worthless. Put them up for sale at Namepros in the Auction section or even the NP Sales and try and get a few dollars to cover your registration fees for your other names. You can also put the names up at eBay.com. I like to sell on eBay and it’s easy to do and does not cost too much. Even if you sell a few names for only $10 that still covers registration and hosting for a few other names.

Next, review all of your names that you want to keep. None of them should be blank pages, at the very least put up a for sale page with a contact us link. Think about developing 1 or 2 of your best names into established websites that will gain traffic and can be resold in the future. The rest of your names should be put with a parking or mini site service like Noomle.com or WhyPark.com. You can also have people create custom mini sites for around $50 just take a look at Namepros Freelance Mini Site Creators. They do all of the work for you including logos and articles and SEO. All you need to do is write a few words about each site and you will be indexed in the Search Engines and start gaining traffic. Your income from ads may not be huge but hopefully it will cover the registration fee until you sell the name.

Using this method you should still spend time promoting your sites to end users but now at least you are earning money to cover cost. This way if you do not make any big sales you did not lose money, you made a little and your sites also gained value with content, traffic and income.

One last point is to reach out to the community, go and make a few friends who own sites like yours and talk about what you can be doing better. Collaboration is one of the best ways to learn.

In these times develop a long term plan where you write down your plans for the next 6 months. What do you want to start and what do you want to sell. I would recommend developing a few websites and growing your traffic. You should look at your financial situation and if you have some spare cash now is the time to invest. There are some really solid names for sale right now and if you feel that you could get a great deal and develop or resell the name later on go ahead and buy it. Now is the time to look at long term investments in the domain marketplace. So go ahead and get serious about domaining.
