Packages and letters to be sent out to domainers
Packages and letters to be sent out to endusers

Selling domains to domainers is futile it is not worth it to sell domains at reseller prices when there are endusers out there. You may turn a reg fee domain into a quick $50 and if that is all you want keep at it. But, if you would like to turn your $10 investment into $xxx and possibly more, you have to target endusers.

Until someone told me about selling to endusers a long time ago,  I had no clue how to go about it. But now I am emailing, calling, mailing, and even faxing* endusers weekly. Just last night I put together about 20 letters and two larger packages that I mailed today to endusers. The larger packages are for the more expansive names, sent with signature confirmation to make sure they get to the right person. Both pictures were picture of what I sent out today. I mail early in the week so they get it Tuesday or Wednesday and have the rest of the week to contact me. If they do not within a weeks time I will call them to ask if they got my letter.

With my budget and names I have had the most success selling names for mid $xxx. I am currently selling localized geo names like CityProfession.com's and I think that the endusers realize the value of the names once I explain it and they feel comfortable paying a few hundred dollars for them.

In the letters I send I try and explain the SEO value and the type in value of the names and how it is kind of like advertising but you only pay once and not per click. This works really well if you know the are using PPC or not.

Letters I sent out to Last Night

My most important tip is be reasonable with your prices, put yourself in their shoes how much would you pay for the name if you were them.

Their are tons of unregistered names that are just waiting to be sold to endusers, start looking today and please ask me any questions at all about contacting endusers.

Updated** Elliot Silver over at Elliot's blog just wrote a great article about selling domain to other domainers. He mentions the time and refusal rate of contacting endusers and I see his point and they are very true. It does take time to sell domains to endusers, but it also takes time to sell to other investors just not normally as much. You are not going to sell every one of your names to an enduser not even half, but if you work hard you can sell some domains for more than you could to a reseller.  Looking back at some of the big names in the industry and some of the larger sales of the past few years many of the sales are to endusers. In conclusion, I would suggest doing a bit of both,  try and sell some domains to endusers, try and flip some to investors. I was just trying to inspire some people to try contacting endusers.

Point taken regarding targeting end users but I would avoid sending faxes. Sending unsolicited advertising-oriented faxes is a violation of Federal law…

The Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991, 47 U.S.C. § 227, makes it a violation of federal law for a person to use any telephone facsimile machine, computer, or other device to send an unsolicited advertisement (a “junk fax”) to a telephone facsimile machine. The Act gives private citizens a right to sue to: (i) enjoin future transmissions, (ii) recover the greater of actual monetary damages or $500 in damages for each junk fax, or (iii) an injunction plus damages. If the court finds that the sender willfully or knowingly violated the Act, the court may increase the award up to three times the amount of damages.

Congrats. Great strategy. I have been doing it for a while, always hit or miss but nice when you get a sale.

You make money and the domain goes to a good use.

@ Leonard I am well aware of the Act, and for sending faxes I will call or email first to ask permission to send the document. lately I have just been using the post office many people do not use fax as much anymore.

    Followed this post from Elliots

“Looking back at some of the big names in the industry and some of the larger sales of the past few years many of the sales are to endusers.”

I remember a post awhile back that showed a great majority of the high-dollar names were still investor buys. Couldn’t remember who did it. And I would venture to guess that the overwhelming majority of any “end user” sale reported never came via a letter.

Something to think about here in terms of strategy also : if you approach a buyer, you lose the upper hand in a negotiation compared to the buyer approaching you. Make yourself easy to find (most people who’d be looking to buy the name have no clue how to do a whois lookup) and you’ll be in a better position in the negotiation process when they approach.

” Looking back at some of the big names in the industry and some of the larger sales of the past few years many of the sales are to endusers. ”

Your analysis isn’t entirely accurate, since most of the big end user sales didn’t come as a result of domain owners contacting end users. I would suspect just about all of the sales happened when an end user needed a particular domain name and contacted the owner with a nice offer. At that point, the owner holds the big advantage and can choose to sell or keep it depending on the offer. Timing is everything, and it’s much harder to get a company to buy a domain name from you when they aren’t the ones doing the approaching.

It is an easy thing to say sell to enduser not domainers but the fact is what is being talked about here, “emailing, calling, mailing, and even faxing* endusers weekly” is swapping your time for a higher price, that is where the extra profit is coming from – the “job” you are taking on. Selling to other domainers in alot less time consuming with far more certainty of a sale – ie it is more like investing.

Elliot and Adam, Great points if you have a killer domain and you want to get the most for it, sure you can wait around and wait for that perfect offer but it might never come. Personally I would rather sell a domain for less to an enduser than go to the grave having paid renewal fees on a domain for 80 years waiting for the perfect offer. I was just trying to show people a way to contact enduers to try and proactively sell their domains instead of just sitting on them.

Elliot I did not say the top sales came from contacting end users I said that some of the top sales have been to endusers.

    Thanks for reading and commenting

Thanks for sharing. Would be very interesting if you turned this into a series of posts and shared some of the following…

    - how many (%) contacted you after receiving your package

    - how many end users you were able to reach by phone

    - initial attitude you encountered by endusers

    - common obstacles to sales you had to overcome

    - estimated time and money spent on this campaign

    - what you viewed as strengths and weaknesses of this approach

Best of luck – looking forward to your future posts.

Great tips Brian! I always love getting a quick domaining tip when I wake up. I’m looking forward to cashing in for some serious $$ (or as you say $xxx).
    I appreciate the free tips.

Thanks Brian, this is helpful info! Despite all the advances in technology I’m with you that some of these old fashion sales strategies can really resonate with some end users. Having worked in corporate SEM for over 5 years, I can tell you that some of the Internet marketing companies out there embrace acquisitions. Target the right companies with the right domains (or even better developed sites) and you could have a deal on your hands. One word of caution: Practice your pitch and be ready for negotiation, some of these guys are amazing negotiators.
